骆驼（camel）素以耐力著称，它可以多天不吃不喝，驮着重物在一望无垠的沙漠中行走。但凡是皆有限度，骆驼的负载能力亦然。据说，最强壮的骆驼的最大负载量约为1200磅，一旦超过了极限，骆驼就会承受不了，英语谚语It is the last straw that breaks the camel's back.(最后一根稻草压断了骆驼的脊背)形象地说明了这个道理。该谚语可能系英国作家狄更斯（Charles Dickens）所创，他在《董贝父子》（Dombey and Son）中写了as the last straw breaks the laden camel's back这样的语句。但狄更斯这种说法来自一个更为古老的谚语It is the last feather that breaks the horse's back.(最后一根羽毛压断马的脊背)。后来人们往往将前一个谚语缩短为straw that breaks the camel's back或the last straw，用以喻指一系列重压、打击之外使人无法承受的最后一击或最终导致失败（或垮台）的因素。
